Two Pedestrians Struck by SUV Mounting Pavement in Kensington High Street

Two pedestrians were left fighting for their lives on Saturday afternoon after a black Range Rover Sport mounted the pavement on Kensington High Street, striking both victims near the entrance to Kensington Palace Gardens. Emergency services rushed to the scene at approximately 2:35pm, where paramedics from the London Ambulance Service found a 34-year-old woman and a 58-year-old man with serious injuries.
Emergency Response and Victim Condition
London's Air Ambulance was dispatched alongside three ground ambulance crews and officers from the Metropolitan Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit. The female victim, identified by neighbours as a local resident, sustained multiple fractures to her pelvis and legs and was airlifted to the Major Trauma Centre at St Mary's Hospital, Paddington. The male victim, believed to be a tourist visiting from Edinburgh, was transported by road ambulance to Chelsea and Westminster Hospital with head injuries and a broken collarbone.
"Both patients were conscious when we arrived but in considerable pain and distress," said a London Ambulance Service spokesperson. "Our paramedics provided advanced trauma care at the scene before transferring them to the nearest major trauma centres for emergency treatment."
Eyewitness Accounts Paint Terrifying Picture
Witnesses described scenes of panic as the large SUV veered sharply onto the crowded pavement. Marianne Chen, 42, who was leaving a café opposite, told London Accident News: "I heard tyres screeching and then this enormous vehicle just came straight at people on the pavement. There was a woman with shopping bags who was thrown into a lamppost. It was absolutely horrifying — people were screaming and running in every direction."
Another witness, retired teacher David Hargreaves, 67, said: "The driver appeared to lose control coming around the bend near the Commonwealth Institute. The vehicle clipped a parked delivery van before mounting the kerb. It all happened in seconds. I've walked this stretch for thirty years and always thought the pavement was dangerously narrow for such a busy road."
Driver Arrested at Scene
The 41-year-old male driver was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and has been taken to a west London police station for questioning. Metropolitan Police Sergeant Rachel Okonkwo confirmed: "The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with our investigation. We are examining CCTV footage from multiple cameras along Kensington High Street and would urge any witnesses who have not yet come forward, or anyone with dashcam footage, to contact us immediately."
Road Safety Concerns on Kensington High Street
The incident has reignited long-standing concerns about pedestrian safety along one of London's busiest shopping streets. Councillor James Whitfield of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea said the council would be reviewing safety measures along the entire stretch. Campaign group Living Streets has previously called for wider pavements and additional bollard protection along the road, where traffic volumes regularly exceed 25,000 vehicles per day.
Kensington High Street was closed in both directions between Earls Court Road and Palace Gate for approximately five hours while collision investigators examined the scene. Transport for London confirmed that bus routes 9, 10, 27, 28, and 49 were diverted via alternative routes throughout the evening.
