E-Scooter Rider Seriously Injured After Collision With Taxi on Euston Road

A 27-year-old e-scooter rider remains in a critical condition at University College Hospital after a violent collision with a black cab on Euston Road during Monday morning's rush hour. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:15am near the junction with Eversholt Street, has intensified the ongoing debate about e-scooter safety on London's busiest thoroughfares and the adequacy of current regulations governing their use.
Collision Details and Emergency Response
Metropolitan Police officers and London Ambulance Service paramedics were called to the scene within minutes of the collision. The e-scooter rider, later identified as software developer James Okoro from Holloway, was found unconscious on the carriageway with serious head and spinal injuries. Despite wearing a helmet, the force of the impact left him with a fractured skull and three broken vertebrae.
"The patient was in a very serious condition when we arrived," said LAS duty manager Claire Simmonds. "Our advanced trauma team administered emergency treatment at the roadside before transporting him under blue lights to the Major Trauma Centre at University College Hospital. His injuries are life-changing and his family have been informed."
Taxi Driver Cooperation and Investigation
The taxi driver, a 54-year-old man who has held a hackney carriage licence for 22 years, stopped immediately and is cooperating fully with the police investigation. He was breathalysed at the scene and tested negative. CCTV footage from nearby businesses is being examined by the Metropolitan Police's Serious Collision Investigation Unit to establish the exact sequence of events.
Inspector Tom Rennison of the Roads and Transport Policing Command said: "Early indications suggest the e-scooter may have entered the junction against a red light, but we are keeping an open mind and conducting a thorough investigation. We are appealing for any witnesses, particularly anyone with dashcam footage from Euston Road between 8:00am and 8:30am, to contact us."
E-Scooter Safety Under Scrutiny
The collision has prompted renewed calls for stricter regulation of e-scooters in the capital. While rental e-scooters operate under a Transport for London trial with speed limiters and designated parking zones, privately owned scooters — which are technically illegal on public roads but widely used — often lack safety features and can reach speeds of 40mph or more.
London Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon, who chairs the Transport Committee, said: "This is yet another devastating collision involving an e-scooter on one of London's most dangerous roads. We urgently need a comprehensive legal framework that addresses both rental and private e-scooters, including mandatory helmet requirements, speed restrictions, and proper insurance. The current legal grey area is putting lives at risk every single day."
A Growing Pattern of Incidents
Department for Transport statistics reveal that e-scooter related injuries in London have increased by 142 per cent since 2023, with 1,247 casualties recorded in the last financial year alone. Campaign group RoadPeace has documented 14 fatalities involving e-scooters across the UK in the past 18 months, four of which occurred in London. Mr Okoro's family have issued a statement through the hospital asking for privacy but urging all e-scooter riders to exercise extreme caution on busy roads.
